about

The band January Son is Alexander Lewis, a solo music artist from Northern California. The Problem of Other Minds is the band’s sophomore release, following 2014’s Occitan Reverb. The new EP furthers the band’s mission to make lyrically dangerous, emotionally driven music. Inspired by the likes of Damien Jurado, Midlake, Spoon, Neil Young, Bon Iver, Bruce Springsteen, and Elvis Costello, January Son is sharp country flavor, rock with a folk spirit, melodic darkness, and killer harmony.

Track Name: Umbrella
I don't know what’s come over me
But if you won’t ask me to stay
People running round crazy these days
Like the world’s getting ready to wash away

And if you don’t like the rain
And if you can’t remember who stars in your pain

Umbrella
I’ll be the one who sees you home

I don’t mind all the talking around
All this trouble may never come down
You and me been round this track a few times
Two dogs running in circles with tongues hanging out

And if you don’t win your race
And if you can’t forget all those animals ways

Umbrella
I’ll be the one who sees you home

If I can’t guess the reasons
If you don’t see the light
And if you keep talking about leaving
And I can’t do anything right
I won’t even try

I don’t mind all the talking around
All this trouble may never come down
It seems like years since the craziness stopped
And I still can’t seem to turn it all off

And if you don’t like to wait
I’ll find us a place where the sun shines all day

Umbrella
I’ll be the one who sees you home
Umbrella
I’ll be the one who sees you home
Track Name: Avalanche
Put on that goddamn song
The one that makes me cry
The one that brings me low
The one that gets me high

There’s a place where I go
Words fall down like neon stars
No more planes up in the sky
Gentle hugs and sassy scars

There is no tension
There is no right or wrong
Either the rats do as I say
Or they will wish they were never born

Keep the kids indoors
Time for dancing in the street
It’s gonna hurt me more than you
For me to knock you off your feet

And it comes down quick
Like an avalanche at night
Doesn’t hurt me now
I don’t want to see the light

You say it’s cold
I don’t want to fight

Put on that goddamn song
The one that struck me blind
The one that stops and starts
The one that saved my life

And it hurts me now
Like an avalanche at night
And it hurts me now
I don’t want to see the light
Track Name: Careful
My mom is a hoot
She never opens up her mouth except to shoot
My mom is a hoot

My dad is a blast
Never leaves the house except to get gas
Had him a girl once, she kicked his ass
My dad is a blast

My mom is a stone
Reach out to give a warm embrace and shatter the bone
My mom is a stone

My dad’s an old poop
Got a head as hard as petrified wood
And lord knows I wouldn’t change him if I could

And he says finish what you start
Careful what you ask
Nothing good or bad ever lasts

And I’ll keep a hold of that side of him
Everyone here knows what I mean
And I can’t stay mad at the sight of her
Broken down on the I-17

My mom never cries
But the tears pour down to split the sky
My mom never cries

My dad cries all night
I never hear the sound, it’s empty and wide
And it’s the loudest sound in my life

And he says finish what you start
Careful what you ask
Nothing good or bad ever lasts
Nothing good or bad ever lasts
